The Headwaters R/C Flying Club’s Fun Fly began in 1998. The first few years it was held in late August and was a one day (Saturday) event. Eventually, it was decided to make the Fun Fly a week end long event and that’s how it continues. In fact, flyers are beginning to show up earlier in the week and this works fine, as there is plenty of room for camping.

A fun fly really has two purposes:1) To produce an enjoyable event for the participants. 2) Earn income, to defray the costs of running an R/C club. It stands to reason that if number one is successful, number two will likely also be successful. So, the focus of the club members for the fun fly has always been to make number one happen. Headwater’s Fun Fly has always been about lots of open flying! There is a relaxed feeling of being able to fly when one wants and sitting and conversing with fellow flyers, when that is what one wants. In recent years, the only event scheduled has been a short combat mission, flown around noon of each day. This is a fun event to watch for participants and the spectators alike. Some participants even bring combat airplanes to compete with.

The Fun fly is open to all R/Cers who are members of the AMA and attracts spectators and participants from across the upper half of Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. All aspects of R/C may be represented: Sport Flyers, Scale, Novelty Aircraft, Giant Scale, Helicopters, Aerobatics, 3D and even an occasional Sailplane. There is a cook shack serving burgers, brats chips, treats and beverages. There is a pot-luck meal prepared on Saturday evenings. There is night flying, campfires and other evening activities. After the flight line is closed each day there are flyers drawings and raffles for everything from radios to airplanes and all things in between. The Fun Fly is committed to everybody having a good time and the history show us to have been successful in this endeavor!
